Transformation of Botanical garden in Ooty


This Botanical garden in Ooty was laid out in the year 1897 by, the Marquis of Tweedale and spreads over 55 acres of land. The transformation of this botanical garden really happened under the care of Mr. W.G. Mclovr, an apprentice from the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew.  He was sent to Ooty by the very known East India Company and converted the garden upside down. 


 


Segregation of this garden into the upper portion, the garden, and the lower portion took place during this period..  The lower portion was a swamp, and which later transformed into a beautiful landscape full of plants and flowers. The kind of effort and hard work he had to put to make this garden the beauty is, evident from the fact that it took him 10 years!


 Lush green, lawns are well maintained,  20 million-year-old fossilized tree, an Italian-style garden bordering a clear pool, a vast variety of flowering bushes and plants in myriad hues (exotic and ornamental), fern house with a vast range of ferns and orchids, are some of the highlights here in this garden.


Rare trees species like the cork tree which is probably the only such tree in India, the paperbark tree, and the monkey puzzle tree; monkeys cannot climb this tree, as a result, named as such. The botanical garden has been divided into six sections namely New Garden, Conservatory, Lower Garden, Nurseries, Italian Garden, and Fountain Terrace.






Lower Garden 

Lower Garden here at the botanical garden, has lawns and the main entrance, which paves the way and opens to green lawns made of Kikuyu grass. Make sure you explore a fern house that flaunts more than 127 species of ferns and takes you to the road that leads to Raj Bhavan.  Along the way, you come across some sprawling lawns and gatehouses.  And while you checking them, you might want to pay keen attention to the laid down awesome floral carpet design of the Indian continent made with plant and signature fossil tree.






New Garden


 The front space of New Garden features a crescent-shaped pond. Here you would find yourself a rose garden flaunting more than 300 species of Polyanthus, hybrid tea roses, and floribunda.  There are flowerbeds that enhance the shape of the garden and carpet bed created with flowers contouring the shape of the map, emblem of Tamilnadu and India along with aquatic plants.


The species in the garden are Pinus wallichiana, Eucalyptus Eugenides, Araucaria cunninghammi, Juniperus virginianaTaxodium mucronatum, Pieris ovalifolia, Ginkgo biloba, Cupressus Lawsonia,  Photinia lindleyana, Pinus canaariensils, etc.


Italian Garden


This Italian styled garden was laid out as a part of reform and punishment by Italian prisoners when they were deported to Ooty during World War I.  The flower beds here have Italian pattern with an octagonal bandstand standing out in its design. Annuals and perennial flowers like zinnia, dahlias, salvia, pansy, begonia, asters, ageratum,  larkspur,  phlox, and petunias making this part of the garden very vibrant as well as attractive.
